Advocacy for climate action and transition to a sustainable society
The project is carried out by the Legal-Informational Centre for NGOs PIC – which has spent the past 20 years working in the field of legal protection of human rights and the environment – and supported by Login5 Foundation.
The current state of the planet and the effects of already apparent climate change provide further encouragement for humanity to set the main goal of the Paris Agreement, to keep the increase in global average temperature to a maximum of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, as the highest priority. We need to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and human practices and activities in all areas must adapt to planetary constraints.
It is the responsibility and legally binding obligation of all states to take immediate action and maximize their efforts to mitigate climate change and environmental degradation, since both directly affect fundamental human rights. Consequently, each country is responsible for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving sustainability goals in its territory. And the same must be demanded from key stakeholders at the international level.
However, the activities and measures currently in place at the state, regional (e.g. EU) or global levels will not be sufficient to achieve the globally agreed and necessary effects. The state must thus become the initiator and bearer of radical changes, more ambitious objectives need to be set and actions need to be long-term oriented with the awareness that transition to a sustainable society demands modifications in our lifestyles.
Since livestock production is the leading factor of the loss of biodiversity and one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as water and soil pollution, PIC will undertake activities in the area of legal advocacy against climate change stemming from the meat industry. Starting with examining the possibility of changing nutrition policy towards reduction of meat consumption, both at the national and EU level. To this end PIC will prepare an analysis of the current state and suggest viable options for actions. Primary aim of PIC is to:
- establish cooperation with the EU network of green NGOS Justice & Environment to discuss possible legal measures at the EU level
- prepare initiatives based on analysis and consultation, and ensure their implementation at the national and EU level
- implement other measures and steps which will lead to the attainment of the goals of the Paris Agreement and the objectives of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, at national, EU and global level
In order to achieve these aims, PIC will evaluate and choose the best advocacy approaches or strategic litigation to attain reduction of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from livestock farming. This can be accomplished by harmonizing agricultural policy with modern science-based nutritional guidelines, both at the national and EU level. A sustainable and responsible agricultural policy should promote healthy food production which is capable of feeding the population, while maintaining a low ecological footprint and optimal use of land. The latest scientific evidence suggests that reducing meat and dairy products while increasing the consumption of plant-based foods would be beneficial for our health, climate and biodiversity.
